“For centuries, cities have been the center of innovation because they foster the type of environment in which innovation thrives: environments with diverse groups of people and knowledge, high probabilities of social interaction, and systems to help people execute their ideas.” - Chad Rochkind
This article centralizes around the idea that Detroit has the potential to become the center of social innovation. Innovation is a great technique that could be used to bring back Detroit. This article highlights the key components that are needed to make innovation work for your city. Rochkind shows how innovation leads to a cycle of success and genuinely helps the city socially and economically.
After reading the article, I completely agree with the ideas presented in this article. I thought Rochkind made valid points and provided lots of supporting evidence to show that innovation could actually work for Detroit.
“It takes the right type of environment—one that cities are uniquely positioned to possess and nourish. The environment must include diversity in people and ideas, high potential for social interaction, and systems in place that help good ideas get off the ground.”- Chad Rochkind
This struck me as interesting because Detroit fits this exact description of an environment that is needed to thrive with innovation. Detroit is very diverse in terms of ethnicity, cultures and ideas. Just working at TechTown, I have seen the vast amount of ideas that are being implemented to make Detroit a better place. There are large amounts of social interaction and the systems are in place to help get good ideas off of the ground. In my opinion, I genuinely think that Detroit will make a comeback. Detroit has the potential to be better than before and is slowly working its way to get there. The driving factor that will make Detroit successful is that the city is so different from NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, etc. Detroit is unique in its own way which will draw in more innovate professionals. This article was a fun read because it did not dwell on the negative aspects of Detroit. The negative portrayal of Detroit within the news prevents people from genuinely believing in Detroit. More articles should be written pertaining to this topic to keep the city going and working hard.
