Nonprofit work is unique work. What have you learned about how nonprofits operate this summer? What is something you didn’t know? What is something that has surprised you?
After the boom and bust of Detroit’s automobile industry, the nation’s fourth most populous city filed for bankruptcy. As a city billions of dollars in debt, Detroit was tumbling into insolvency. However, with the help of various local nonprofits along with different large-scale programs, Detroit was able to rebuild its community.
Nonprofit is indeed unique work. These community organizations are able to provide influential and significant changes within its community. They help ensure that the homeless and struggling families have access to food, hygiene, and health resources. But not only can these organizations help pull a community out of the devastating impacts of a bankrupt city, but it can also help improve and enhance so many other aspects of a municipality.
Nonprofit work is unique in that it can be in any field and any sector. Nonprofits not only bring together people with similar mindsets and passions, but they also help the community in the area of what the organization is based in. For instance, nonprofits like TechTown can push and grow the economy. These entrepreneurial service organizations along with various nonprofit accelerators and incubators help promote the economy by support startups in a variety of fields. Extending from the medtech space to the farming and agriculture area, these nonprofits support different interests and goals of the city.
Different nonprofits have different purposes. They can help economic development, public safety, growth, financial stability, equality and equity, environment, education, and so much more. While I knew the extent of variety in nonprofits before this summer, I didn’t know the extent of its complexities and intricacies. After working with MedHealth, attending various TechTown meetings, and learning about various organizations in the community through my research, I have developed a better understanding of the innerworkings of a nonprofit.
I was surprised to see such a large group of people work so well together like a well-oiled machine. It was so inspiring to see a nonprofit grow so large and collaborate so well. TechTown has slowly grown to develop various initiatives under it, including MedHealth.
