The article I have chosen is one which describes how Detroit City FC, Detroit’s premier soccer team is run. I chose this article because ever since we visited their stadium last weekend to watch their game against Toledo, the atmosphere, friendliness and overall spirit of the community has stuck with me. To me, DCFC represented what Detroit is all about. A strong sense of community, a pride of where you come from, and most importantly, a quintessential “Detroit vs Everyone” attitude. The article goes into detail about how the club has been run in a sustainable and careful manner, making sure that all members of the community are fully involved. I agree wholeheartedly with the article and the credit that it gives DCFC for its work in soccer. The article stresses on the innovation of the soccer team, going away from a typical sports ownership model of millionaires with self-vested interests in profit making towards a community-based approach where each individual has a stake in the club. The author of the article stresses this, and in doing so, encapsulates what is so great about Detroit: people itself. Furthermore, what struck me about the article is how it not only focused on the soccer-side of DCFC, in which they are excelling and top of their respective 4th - tier league, but also their activities off the pitch. The author mentions ticket sales and how Detroit differs from the rest of the soccer teams in America by offering cheap tickets that allow all families, no matter what their income status is, to come to the stadium each weekend to enjoy the soccer.

My opinion greatly mirrors the author’s in that DCFC and the surrounding infrastructure they have built is truly unique sight to behold in modern day soccer. In a world where so many are motivated by profit and fame, DCFC stands out as a club that opposes this, whilst also achieving success on the pitch. Their constant dedicated to support issues that are important in today’s world, as seen by many of their banners which are painted with the LGBTQ+ colors symbolize their dedication to upholding what is right. Their ability to combine a passion and excitement for their team and city, with a friendly and inclusive atmosphere that welcomes all people no matter what their background, race, religion or ethnicity makes Detroit City FC such a special place to visit in Detroit.
