I have had the privilege to interview over 50 business owners during my time at TechTown. Many of them are working on incredibly impactful projects from increasing food accessibility with a cafeteria on a bus to crafting environmentally friendly candles. Nutritional, mental, and physical health are passions of mine, so I was especially intrigued by Karla Mitchell of Exhalation Integrative Wellness (EIW).

Karla wears many hats. She is a native Detroiter, wife, entrepreneur, and mother of five. As the founder of EIW and a Clinical Traditional Naturopath, she leads EIW’s many services. She organizes naturopathy wellness plans, community healthy events, and acupuncture. Their holistic approach to healing and wellness helps to increase client awareness of the conditions within their total‐being; thus leading to a more healthy lifestyle. We consider all elements of lifestyle including diet, exercise and nutrition; as well as overall physical, mental,  spiritual and emotional wellbeing. These offerings provide clients who are stressed, depressed, or struggling with chronic diseases much relief that traditional medical practices do not always help. Importantly, Karla’s services are much more affordable than traditional medicine, increasing access and inclusion to relief.

Although different from many traditional businesses, EIW delivers unique social impact. Naturopathy is rare and provides many with a range of new, effective treatment methods. It could help lower mental barriers and cure physical pain. Importantly, it provides these benefits without the high cost of a doctor’s visit or getting prescriptions.

What I love most is how Karla is using her determination and passion to make a distinct impact. She has studied natural healing and received a Doctorate in Naturopathy while pursuing a career in Detroit’s automotive industry. Even as a mother, employee, and student, she chased her interest in natural health and turned it into a business that can help others. Her current body of work focuses on improving health outcomes, reducing and preventing dependencies, and educating and empowering people to make informed health care choices.

Karla’s story and business inspires me to find my niche in social impact. It is a good reminder that anyone can utilize their interests to help others and pursue their goals no matter the obstacles. As I grow as a student, employee, and social entrepreneur, I will keep Karla in mind, always seeking to innovate with passions.
