Prompt: Please interview someone living and/or working in the social impact space in Detroit. Write a piece about them that you can share.
A week after our group meal at the Detroit Shipping Company, Rafa, Kushal, and I ventured over there for the third time this summer. We had initially gone as the Detroit Shipping Company had been recommended to us for its amazing food and atmosphere from a local; the food certainly did not disappoint. Soon after, we had our cohort dinner there, and then again we made the trip over. On our initial trip to the Detroit Shipping Company, we explored the building and found the storefront for the Detroit brand David Vintage. We had a polite conversation with David, the owner. I also bought a hat, but that was it. On our most recent trip, I went with this prompt in mind, and in hopes of running into David again. I thought he would be a wonderful person to interview that lives in Detroit.
David started the brand after experimenting with fashion. He merged his love of fashion and the city of Detroit, and uses his skills to promote the resurgence and power of Detroit. A Detroit native, he is proud that his brand is entirely sourced and based in Detroit. A streetwear brand, he wanted to create something that all Detroiters could proudly wear - which they do, as I have seen his brand countless times downtown.
During the interview, David shared the inspiration of the two phrases most seen on his clothing: Detroit Never Left and Detroit Is Back. While I initially thought it seemed like these two phrases contradicted each other, he explained how they are not. David explained to me that Detroit Never Left really concerns the spirit and people of Detroit. Detroit’s spirit never died as the people who give it life, those who stay through the difficult times and try to uplift their communities, never left. What made Detroit, Detroit, always was here, but now the city is ready to rise again.
David also explained to me that Detroit is Back explains how while Detroit is a wonderful city, it has experienced more than its fair share of pain and turmoil. He still sees the impact of these difficult times on his city, including most recently Detroit’s bankruptcy. Nonetheless, Detroit is a powerhouse, with a spirit that never died, and is rising again. Detroit is Back after overcoming and persevering.
These two phrases for him work like “yin and yang”. Seeing David vigilantly pursue his goals, create a successful fashion brand, and stick by his hometown of Detroit represents the true Detroiter. He is what is great about the city of Detroit, and will allow Detroit to rise again.
