The article I chose is “How to celebrate National Detroit-Style Pizza Day with Buddy’s Pizza, The Salvation Army”. The article discusses how the Salvation Army and Buddy’s Pizza are partnering up for National Detroit-Style Pizza Day. On June 23, for every pizza that is sold at a Buddy’s in Metro Detroit, a $1 donation will be made to the Salvation Army and 10% of orders will be donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank. It goes on to explain how the idea started in 2021 to celebrate the history, style and roots of the pizza. According to a press release, last year Buddy’s donated over $7,000 to three community organizations to help fight hunger and homelessness. The piece goes on to list restaurants across Detroit and the United States joining the initiative, including Square Pizza Co., Detroit Style Pizza Co., and Atlanta Rice N’ Pie.

I support this great initiative and find it very creative. It strikes me for a number of reasons. First, I love the creativity of a National Detroit-Style Pizza Day service initiative. It is a great way to help fight hunger and homelessness while promoting delicious pizza. Next, the article reinforces a common theme of Detroit Pride that I have become fond of during my time in the city. I love how proud the community is in its history as shown by the promotion of its famous pizza. The continued ingenuity of service was most striking to me. Detroit continues to support and lift each other up. Before coming to the city, I was unsure of how vibrant its community would be. I have been blown away by the continued acts of service, all to lift up fellow Detroiters.

At first this article seems simplistic. However, I think it gives a deeper inspiration about how businesses can give back. Businesses are often portrayed as focusing only on the bottom line, but this article shows that creative ideas to increase profits while positively impacting others is very possible. It is a demonstration of the social innovation we strive towards and one that I will keep in mind as an aspiring business owner. Whether it be through nonprofit consulting or a local pizza place, I am excited to see more social impact in the city.
