Pick a news article or feature about Detroit that strikes you. What is the article or story saying? Do you agree with it or not? What about this particular piece of writing or video struck an interest with you? What is your opinion?
The article that I have chosen is “Detroit named best pizza city in America and we agree.” This article, as the headline states, talks about Detroit having the best pizzas in America. Being the founding city for major pizza chains like Little Caesar, while simultaneously housing various smaller boutique restaurants like San Morello, I think Detroit has cemented itself as a pizza hub. My first meal in Detroit was the Detroit style pizzas provided to us by Matt and Katherine. I can certainly say I fell in love with this style immediately. A few days after that I tried the thin crust pesto pizzas at San Morello and they were equally delectable. Since that day I have been in love with not just Detroit’s pizzas but just its food in general.
I am an extremely big foodie, so when I found out that I will be spending most of my summer in Detroit, a city that I had never visited and was far from home, I did not know what to expect for my meals. However, this city has done nothing but impress me in that criteria. When I am not home cooking meals, I am out exploring the multiple eateries in this city with my cohort members. I have been treated to some excellent meals in every possible cuisine. Detroit is the city where I finally discovered a delicious vegetarian burger in the US: the ‘Shroom Burger at Shake Shack. It is also the city where I have had the best Mozzarella Sticks of my life: the ones at Tony Vs.
At the same time that I am at these restaurants, I have got to meet some lovely residents of Detroit. For example, everytime we’re at Tony Vs, we interact with Tony himself. He is one of the friendliest restaurant owners I have met in my life. Even though he’s originally from Albania, he’s lived in Detroit for most of his life. Just sitting down with him and listening to his life stories is extremely inspiring.
These interactions with the residents of Detroit have further made me fall in love with this city, its food and its people. I honestly cannot wait to delve further into the smaller restaurants of Detroit in the next few weeks.
