Ever since I’ve came to Detroit, I have witnessed many examples of social entrepreneurship. To me, social entrepreneurship means creating something that tangibly benefits the people around them. Social entrepreneurship impacts not just one person or client, but many people, even those not directly involved within the social entrepreneurship. The main purpose of social entrepreneurship is to make the lives easier and happier for people in a given city, state, or other specified area.
Social entrepreneurship is very important for the world we live in. Without social entrepreneurship, the benefits of society would only be concentrated on a few people, mainly upper-class people. In my view, the difference between social entrepreneurship and ordinary entrepreneurship is that social entrepreneurship creates societal change for everyone. Through social entrepreneurship, people are able to create health, environmental, social, and political changes that can benefit many different types of people.
One example of social entrepreneurship I have witnessed is the opening of the Spirit Plaza in Detroit. The Spirt Plaza was previously just a busy traffic road. However, the city of Detroit decided to innovate and turn this ho-hum traffic intersection into a bustling, lively place. Throughout the unveiling of Spirit Plaza, the Detroit city officials compared the Spirit Plaza to the very successful Times Square. I thought it was incredible that the city officials had such a grand vision for Spirit Plaza. During the opening ceremony, everyone speaking was incredibly optimistic and enthusiastic about the success of Spirit Plaza. Their optimism reminded me of a quote from Walt Disney: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” The city officials dreamt of turning an ordinary traffic road into a bubbly place where people can walk around and have a great time with their friends and buy food from food trucks. However, the process of transforming a normal road to a plaza required much planning and coordination. Creating societal change is not easy, and during the opening ceremony Mayor Duggan honored the many people who helped in the process of creating Spirit Plaza.
The opening of the Spirit Plaza sticks out as a great example of social entrepreneurship for me because it’s clear how many people are going to benefit from the new Spirit Plaza. The Spirit Plaza changed society by giving Downtown Detroit more pizzazz and vigor. People now have another great avenue to relax and socialize in Downtown Detroit. Thousands of happy Detroiters will now walk through the Sprit Plaza every day because of this new plaza.
