Innovation has been a key part of human progress throughout the years. Innovation is the reason the human race is where we are today. It’s the introduction of ingenious new ideas that help get progress. Social innovation is a branch of innovation that makes the lives better of those around us. It brings together progress in the community and makes sure everyone is benefitting from new solutions being implemented to solve existing problems.
To me social innovation is an extremely crucial part of society. It puts together long term solutions whose benefits are shared amongst a large community. I think that for an economy to progress it is extremely essential to give a lot of attention to issues that affect society as a whole. Social innovation does just that and keeps society prospering. While a lot of people mistake social innovation for charity, I believe its impact goes beyond just providing funds. Charity is like ‘words’, social innovation is like ‘actions’ that actually bring about change.
Throughout my life I have led several social innovation projects. For example, I created a mathematics website for the students in the state boards of India to practice applied mathematics, a concept that was extremely lacking in their curriculum. While this was just a small step I could take, it definitely made me realize the power of social innovation. Thousands of students benefited from this tiny endeavor of mine. Another one was when I developed and taught an electronics curriculum to empower the youth of India. All the students that I had taught at the academy were placed with better jobs at the end and were able to support their family a lot better.
My past experiences with social innovation drove me to apply to this Duke Engage program so that I can further be part of the impact social innovation has in a completely new city. In this past week, I have embraced this challenge with utmost passion and cannot wait to have my social impact on this beautiful city of Detroit.
